Johannesburg Zoo vs. Pretoria Zoo:
Many often wonder how Johannesburg Zoo compares to Pretoria Zoo. Having visited both, I can confidently say that each has its unique charm. While Pretoria Zoo boasts a larger land area and a vast collection of animals. Johannesburg Zoo excels in its proximity to the city center, making it convenient for visitors seeking a day of adventure amidst the urban landscape. The Johannesburg Zoo offers a more intimate and family-friendly atmosphere, providing a perfect balance between wildlife encounters and modern amenities. Beyond providing a delightful experience for visitors, Johannesburg Zoo plays a significant role in conservation efforts and education. Throughout the Zoo, informative exhibits highlight the importance of protecting endangered species and preserving their habitats. By visiting the zoo, you contribute to these vital initiatives, as a portion of the ticket proceeds goes towards supporting wildlife conservation projects.
Can You bring your own Food?
The Johannesburg Zoo allows visitors to bring their own food and drinks. This it an excellent spot for a picnic-style outing. There are no braai facilities available, as they do not want open flames to be made in the park. However you are welcome to bring your Cadac gas braai with you or something similar. Whether you’re enjoying a leisurely stroll through the Zoo’s captivating exhibits or relaxing in designated picnic areas. You can savor your favorite treats amidst nature’s wonders. Just remember to clean up after yourself and dispose of waste responsibly, to maintain the Zoo’s cleanliness and preserve the animals’ well-being.

What animals can you see?
Prepare to be awestruck by the diverse range of animals that call Johannesburg Zoo home, we certainly were! The Zoo houses a remarkable variety of species from Africa and multiples representing the world’s different habitats. As you venture through the Zoo’s themed areas, you’ll encounter majestic big cats, including lions; cheetahs; and leopards, each displaying their unique grace and power.

For primate enthusiasts, the Zoo’s Primate World showcases playful Chimpanzees; intelligent Orangutans; Gigantic Gorillas and adorable Lemurs. Which provides an insightful glimpse into the intricate lives of our closest relatives. Amidst lush greenery, the African Savannah zone transports you to the heart of Africa. Here you’ll find graceful Giraffes; towering Elephants; majestic Rhinoceroses and not so Happy Hippos. These gentle giants are sure to leave an indelible impression on your heart and there are but a few places you get to experience the Entire Big-5 in a single day.

We were pleasantly surprised to encounter farm animals in the midst of all the other unique and less commonly seen animals. Although less surprised to find kids to be equally interested in what I may have taken for granted. Lastly, don’t miss the chance to explore the Bird Aviary, a paradise for avian enthusiasts. You’ll encounter an array of feathered wonders, from brilliantly-hued Parrots to elegant Flamingos, all harmoniously coexisting in this delightful aviary.

Was it worth it?
As the sun set on my day at the Johannesburg Zoo, I was filled with a profound sense of awe and gratitude for the enchanting experiences I had encountered. The memories of locking eyes with a curious Chimpanzee rolling over and upside down to ensure he gives me good stare back. Witnessing the elegance of a gliding Flamingo, and feeling the earth tremble under the powerful steps of an Elephant. Although I will admit it was not as majestic as seeing them in their natural habitat, I will highly recommend the experience as a close second.
Beyond the captivating wildlife, the Johannesburg Zoo’s commitment to conservation left an indelible mark on my soul. Whether you’re a solo traveler seeking moments of tranquility, a family eager to share giggles with playful animals, or a nature enthusiast on a quest for discovery. The Johannesburg Zoo is a sanctuary where dreams of encountering the wild come true. There is however absolutely no doubt in my mind that the focus is placed on kids. With interactive murals, education centers, large kids play areas and Carnival Rides to cater to all ages. And by supporting this haven of wonder, we contribute to the preservation of our planet’s precious biodiversity for future generations to cherish.
